1. The writer worries about the earth's lack of resources. He considers that people waste its resources abnormally, and it may be too little space as well as facilities on our earth to survive, especially for the poor (poor, undeveloped countries). The writer also asks a question about whether everyone on earth has an equal right to an equal share of its resources. This question inspired the writer to make the argument.
2. In my point of view, the author writes to people, but not to all people on earth, he speaks to his people, rich people, who are on lifeboat (Americans). May be, he does not want them to help poor countries so as not to share their wealth with others. Since sharing with the poor may lead them being in need of resources.
3. I suppose that the writer might want "his people" to think deeply and understand clearly that resources on earth are not enough to supply everyone because the population growth and many other factors in different countries vary. And if someone feels guilty of being saved, he or she is welcome to give his or her place to the other.

Personally, I do not think that the main idea of the author was to persuade people to maintain natural resources. Not feeding poor people does not make serious contribution to the preservation of our Earth. The thing is that poor people do not EAT much, do not WATER a lot. Furthermore, they don’t build plants, airfields, chemical factories, cars, planes that are considered to be among the most harmful to the nature factors. According to the statistic of “Global Issues, The Human Development Report Research” (7.23.2012) 1.1 billion of the world population do not just have adequate access to the water. (Obviously, most of them are poor). Moreover, total number of Children who die annually from lack of access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation is 1.4 million! Shocking fact.
To maintain the nature, if I were Garrett Hardin, I would persuade people not to allow RICH people grow in population. With the growth of rich people, there is a growth of their needs, demands, and their financial condition will allow them to get want they want, even if it brings harm to the environment.
He strongly persuades people not to help those in bad condition. His main ideas appear against helping poor people. His main inspiration was his selfishness, his intolerance towards them. He does not want to give a hand to those people he cannot take advantage of. He is afraid that the lifeboat will be full of unnecessary people that will lead to the crush of all who are in.

1.The author appeals to his fellow-citizens to think more deeply about current worldwide problems and introduces his own ideas about global issues. As I have already mentioned, the problems of overpopulation and immigration, in author’s opinion, are the cause for the appearance of above mentioned problems at first place. As an ecologist, Garrett Hardin mostly focuses on protecting the environment by all means. His article seems to be a little harsh and uncompromising to the majority of readers, but everyone can learn something new from Garrett’s statements.
2.To my mind, the writer is mainly addressing his colleagues, but this article is not informative only for specialists in this field, but also for students and public in common. Historical examples, metaphors that are popular in journalism, author’s conclusions are used in this article. All these elements make this article intriguing and compelling both to students and public.
3.Garrett Hardin fully expressed his personal attitude towards the actual problems. With the help of his logical reflections and overall educational background he tried to persuade people to agree with his point of view. I can’t concur with all the points he made, but in general this article was interesting to read due to diversity of topics he touched upon, coherent conclusions and English terminology he used.
1. What inspired/unleashed the writer to make this argument?
The world around us is totally helpless against the harsh acts of human being. The recourses are becoming completely fewer as the number of population; “consumers” of them are increasing sharply. What I think is that it is the exact reason that unleashed the author of the article. Besides this he is fixed in his mind about unequal rise of world population.
Garrett Hardin, the writer, is from the US and so, it is natural to see his worry about immigrants also.
2. To whom do you think the writer is writing?
The readers of this article are mainly expected to be the Americans, as he defends the position of this nation. Several sentences from the article can be given as evidence to the given opinion above. For instance, paragraph “A Nation of Immigrants” the second sentence:” Our Government acknowledges a net inflow of 400,000 immigrants a year. While we have no hard data on the extent of illegal entries, educated guesses put the figure at about 600,000 a year.”, paragraph “Immigrants vs. Food Supply” the first sentence : “We Americans of non-Indian ancestry can look upon ourselves as the descendants of thieves who are guilty morally, if not legally, of stealing this land from its Indian owners. Should we then give back the land to the now living American descendants of those Indians?”
3. What do you imagine the writer might want readers to do with the argument?
His purpose of the research is to motivate his nation to unite in order to convince the population of poor countries to decrease the birth rate and to develop the economy. Moreover, he wants his readers to save the world from any environmental ruins. His suggestion about this is primarily to educate the nations of poor countries.
